Catherine Ann (Fegan) Hachey

November 18, 1940 — April 6, 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Catherine, “with a C”, Ann Hachey (Fegan) announces her unexpected death. Catherine died at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa on April 6, 2021, following a major stroke on April 3.

Catherine was born on November 18, 1940 in Lennoxtown, Scotland, and was raised in Ipswich, England. She was a resident of the Kennebecasis Valley in New Brunswick from 1972 until 2019, when she moved to Ottawa to be closer to her family. She was the proud mother of Jean-Pierre (Jacynthe) of Ottawa and Andrew (Brandon) of Toronto; loving grandmother of Jean-Pierre’s children Ben, Max, and Isabelle; and devoted sister to James Fegan (Ritsuko) of Tokyo, Japan. She is also survived by her well-loved cat, Georgia, who will move to Toronto with Andrew. She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Ann Fegan, her brother, Joe Fegan, and her husband, John Hachey.

Everyone who knew Catherine knows how much she loved people and enjoyed keeping up friendships, and making new ones. Many people also know how much she loved proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Catherine had an independent mind and was always curious. She was a devoted and supportive friend and family member. She was strongly dedicated to fairness and stood up for others. Her flexibility and adaptability allowed her to stay in good spirits, including during Covid-19 restrictions. Regardless of the limitations on physical contacts, she kept in touch by FaceTime, phone, email, and text. She loved to stay active, and was an avid practitioner of Tai Chi.

Jean-Pierre and Andrew are deeply grateful for the kindness and compassion of the nurses at the Civic Hospital, who took such good care of their mum, and were so dedicated to ensuring she was comfortable and peaceful during her last days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation (ohfoundation.ca). Catherine wanted to be remembered at a joyous celebration of her life, with her friends and family. One will be held in New Brunswick, at a time in the future when it can be attended by the many people who cared about her.
