Kathleen (Kay) Finch (nee Perkins)

Aug 8th, 1921 – April 9th, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Kathleen (Kay) Finch at Lanark Lodge, Perth on Friday April 9th, 2021 at the age of 99.

Kay will be deeply missed by her three children Marilyn, Jacqueline (Michael) and Adrienne (Ronnie), four grandchildren Jeremy (Isabel), Carolyn, Erika (Tyler) and Fiona (David) and four great grandchildren, Lauren, Evan, Edith and Lillian. She is predeceased by her husband, Freddie (1982), sister Sheila (2016) and is survived by her sister, Maureen, in London, England and brother, John, in San Antonio, Texas and their families.

Born in Nottingham England on August 8th, 1921, Kay had a large extended family on both sides. Sadly, her father died when she was 9 and her sister, Maureen, just 3 months old. She spent much time with her grandparents, living with one or the other of them during her early years.

When she was 14, Kay finished school and went to work at Erikson’s (a telecommunication company still in operation today) in the office. Her mother remarried the same year and with her new husband, Stan Charman, transferred to London. Kay stayed in Nottingham and lived with her maternal grandparents until 1941.

In March of 1941, when she was 19, she joined the Women’s Royal Air Force (WRAF) and spent most of the war years at Cranwell, Lincolnshire. She met her husband, Freddie, there in the summer of 1945 and married in February 1946. Marilyn and Jacqueline were born in England, before the family emigrated in 1952 to Toronto, Canada where Adrienne was born in 1954.

The family moved out of Toronto in 1958, first to Georgetown and then Brampton in 1964. Kay returned to work in 1959, eventually joining Bundy Tubing as assistant to the vice-president in 1968; a position she held for 15 years until her retirement in 1983.

Kay and Freddie travelled extensively over the years. She continued to travel with her beloved sister, Maureen, after Freddie died in 1982; her close friend, Connie and after Connie’s death in 1994, her companion, Peter Draycott. She travelled all over North America, western Europe, and to the far east, and the South Pacific.

Due to Kay’s warm and outgoing personality, she had an active social life and a wide circle of friends, playing bridge at any opportunity. She took up badminton in retirement (she had been a tennis player when young) and played for 20 years until she was 84. She learned to golf and played until she was 91, her last game was in a tournament with Jacqueline, Carolyn and Isabel.

Kay moved to Perth from Brampton in 2017 after 53 years, to be closer to Adrienne and her family. She lived in Carolina Retirement Residence before moving to Lanark Lodge for the last 4 months.

Thank you to all those who provided Kay with exceptional care the past few years; the staff at Carolina and Lanark Lodge, the Local Health Integrated Network and Dr. Shelly Xu. Following Kay’s wishes there will not be a funeral service. She will be laid to rest at a private interment when Covid restrictions allow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society in remembrance of Kay.
