Modris Karlis Lorbergs

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Modris Karlis Lorbergs on January 22, 2021. Modris was 70 years old and the beloved husband of Kristine for over 38 years. Modris was the cherished Papa of Amanda (Kit), Aina, and Andra (Martins). As a proud Opa, he was adored and loved by his young grandson Emīls. He is also fondly remembered by his sister Rodni and niece Tara. Modris is predeceased by his parents Modris and Irmgarde, and sister Baiba.

Modris was born in Rosenheim, Germany and moved to Canada in 1959. He graduated with a B.P.E. from McMaster University (1975) and a B.Ed. from the University of Toronto (1976). Modris worked as a high school teacher in Toronto for over 30 years, where he was recognized for his contributions to student-athlete development. Modris whole-heartedly enjoyed everything about sports. After he stopped playing sports himself, he spent much of his life coaching youth teams, officiating volleyball and swimming, attending sporting events, and watching his favourite teams in the stands and on TV. While his daughters were in school, he was always there to cheer them on at their swim meets, volleyball tournaments, track meets, and other athletic endeavours. As president of the Latvian Sports Association in Canada, he was a dedicated volunteer and enthusiastic supporter of the Latvian and Baltic sporting communities. Modris also enjoyed seeking out Latvian athletes at local competitions to encourage them to participate in Latvian sporting events. Above all, Modris will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, and generous man who greeted everyone with a smile and warm welcome. He has many extended family members, friends, colleagues near and far who he enjoyed spending time with and catching up with virtually when he couldn’t be with them in-person.

In light of Covid-19 restrictions, only immediate family members are allowed to attend his funeral service. A celebration of his life will be planned once travel and gatherings are permitted. Modris was special to so many of us and will be deeply missed.

Modris Lorbergs’ family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Sidrabene. Cheques should be made out to: “St. Andrew’s Ev. Luth. Latvian Congr.” and designated in M.K. Lorbergs memory. Donations can be also made via e-transfer to: admin@standrewslatvian.org or by using the “donate” button on the St. Andrew’s website, www.standrewslatvian.org.
