Ronald Read

January 1, 1970 — January 1, 1970

Toronto

Ron passed peacefully at Eatonville Care Center at age 85 after several years of declining health. He is survived by his wife Rosiane, son Jean-Michel (Christina), daughter Dominique (Stephen), stepdaughter Sophie, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  He will be sadly missed by his brother Ted (Senka) and his many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents Don and Isabelle, brother John (Natalie), and sister Susan (Jack).

Ron was the second oldest of four children. He loved to recount the days growing up in Stoney Creek with the Sopinka family, with whom he remained great friends until the end.  His youth was spent playing basketball, football, and hockey, garnering the nickname “Rocket Ronny”.  He graduated from the University of Toronto and soon began teaching in Oakville.  It was there that he met Rosiane at a chance encounter at the grocery store. They moved to Toronto where he taught at George Brown College for many years, although it was his years in real estate that brought him joy.  Many of his clients became friends. He was known for his work ethic and handshake deals which came to an end when he was 80.

Competing at tennis with his buddies, tromping through the woods at the farm, and cocktail hour in Hawaii (or anywhere) were his favourite pastimes. He loved to work with his hands, refinishing furniture and working in the garden.  He was quick to laugh, fiercely loyal, and generous with his time. His illness took many things from him, but his love and kindness endured to the end.

A celebration of life will occur this summer with friends and family. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Alzheimer's society of Canada can be made
