Sylvia Maureen McKitterick

March 2, 1937 — July 4, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia McKitterick.

Sylvia was the loving wife and best friend of Mike McKitterick for 64 years. She was a gentle and loving mother to her two children, Chris (Jean Johnston) and Samantha (Rod Hunt) and an amazing Nanny to her 4 grandchildren Isabelle (Karel Hermans) & Phillip (Shelby) McKitterick and Connor (Anna) & Bradley Hunt. She welcomed, in 2020, her first great-granddaughter Avaline Sylvia Jean Hermans whom she treasured with her whole heart.

She is survived by her loving brother David (Abbotsford BC) and her treasured Sister-in-law Gillian (Roy) from England whom she had a very special and close relationship with, as well as many nieces and nephews scattered across England and Western Canada.

Sylvia and Mike immigrated to Canada from England in 1967, moved from Belleville to Smiths Falls and settled there to raise their family. She loved being part of the community and was involved with Brownies, Girl Guides and Pathfinders and loved her games of tennis and the Smiths Falls Tennis club. They had a lovely group of friends and socialized often.

For Chris and Samantha growing up, friends were always welcomed with open arms and when Paul Garforth (like a second son to them), or anyone else needed a place to lay their heads, there was always a bed available, a hot meal and a hug….and sometimes even a car to borrow.

Once grandchildren arrived, Nanny and Grandad’s time was spent doting on them. The cookie jar was always full when the kids arrived for a sleep-over and mornings were greeted with a large glass of milk and 2 cookies to start the day off properly - Nanny style!

The family would like to express their heartfelt thank you to the nurses and caregivers who helped during these past several months.

Cremation has taken place and donations to the charity of your choice would be most welcome.

“Mind how you go Nan” xo
