MAIER, Walter

September 26, 1925 - October 4, 2021

passed away a week after his 96th birthday. WWII RAF officer of the 547 Squadron Coastal Command in Fife, Scotland and the 2451 Squadron Aircraft Control and Warning in 1945.

While stationed in Scotland, he met and married his beautiful wife, Agnes (Nan) Patterson on September 29, 1945. "Walt" worked for Labatt Breweries, becoming the top salesman when they moved from Windsor Ontario, to Walkerton, then Owen Sound and finally bought a farm in Shallow Lake where he and his daughter raised and showed Pinto, Paint and Quarter horses. Walt was also an avid hunter and yachtsman. After retiring from Labatt’s after 33 years, the farm was sold, and they moved to the Kitchener area where Walt had been born. During that time, he went to work for Apple Auto Glass. They moved a couple of years later to a retirement resort in Embro where he got into installing satellite dishes and helping the owner with odd jobs. They were snowbirds in the winter and settled in Lake City Florida for their 6 months until they ran into health complications and could not make the trip anymore. After 67 years of marriage, Nan passed away leaving Walt alone. A year later he decided to move to Hanover to be closer to his daughter. His health was deteriorating with arthritis. His daughter Heather was looking for a bigger place for her horses, so Walt decided to split all costs with her to buy a hobby farm in Lunenburg Ontario. Not even 2 years later in May 2021, he had lost the sight in his right eye. He was diagnosed with melanoma ocular cancer which had metastasized to other parts of the body. He refused treatment due to his age, and the cancer was already in his lungs and liver. Heather took time off work to care for him at home in respect of his wishes to die at home. The last week was a struggle for both Walt and Heather. There was no support or relief during his palliative journey in the home. He eventually passed away at 1740h in his bed with Heather holding his hand. Special thanks to Heather’s coworkers at Maxville Manor for their comfort during this time of loss. And thank you to Basic Funerals from Ottawa. The last great memory they gave Heather was Walt leaving the house wrapped in the Canadian Flag. Very honorable and respectful of the service he gave to Canada.

Predeceased by his parents George and Wealthy Maier, his sister Ruby, and his wife Nan.

Survived by his only child Heather of Lunenburg Ontario, his grandchildren Nicki-Lee and Aaron both of Toronto and his nieces and nephews in the UK, and Doris Pearson of St. Mary's, Ontario, Walt and Nan's best friend for years

In keeping with Walt's dying wish, there will be no funeral. He wished to be cremated and have his urn brought back home to his daughter.
